You Win Some, You Lose Some
So, the Times ran their list of local blogs today.
I was so excited about this, not so much because I was thinking it would garner a ton of extra exposure, but because I have this dorky thing about me where I think many more people should jump on the blog bandwagon. Not necessarily as bloggers themselves, but as participants in the blogosphere at large. Anything that promotes blogs with a tight focus, a sharp voice, and a fresh slant is a good thing in my book. In my heart of hearts, despite my rampant and shameless egoism, I want the blogosphere to develop into a quality "place," a zone of unmatched expression.
Today, though, my excitement has dimmed, and here we go back to the shameless egoism thing: Midnight Culmination is not on the list. I don't know why. I know it was submitted. I've even had little email dialogues with Times employees about some of my posts. Yet, the list remains Midnight-free. I am very sad about this.
On the other hand, though, I received a letter from a prestigious literary journal today, saying that they loved a story I sent them. They have declined to publish it, but getting a real letter, as opposed to a 4x6 rejection form, is seriously the next best thing. I have been unduly encouraged to send more.
The letter goes on to explain that the story won't be published by them because they are a journal of fine letters and, as such, don't feel comfortable with the level of profanity in my story. There was apparently a brief editorial pow-wow, in which they considered asking me to remove the profanity, but, ultimately, it was decided that the removal would turn the story into something else.
But, still! They had a meeting about me! Ooooh, special!
And, I think, probably cooler than getting on a bloglist. Although that still kinda rankles me.
Now go back up our corner of the blog universe! Read your local writers!
